NAUTISME ESPACE ATLANTIQUE (NEA II) PROJECT
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF MARINE LEISURE AND WATERSPORTS IN THE ATLANTIC AREA

NEA 2 is a transnational cooperation project which succeeds the NEA I project.

The NEA I project brought together 11 partners from 7 regions, 5 countries (Mid-West Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, La Manche, Galicia, Norte Portugal) with one objective: the coordinated sustainable development of water activities and particularly marine leisure and watersports tourism in the Atlantic Area. This first interregional cooperation project on marine leisure was carried out from November 1st 2004 until October 31st 2007.

The results of the NEA I were very positive with strong networks of cooperation developed in the regions so the partners decided to extend their cooperation and to work together on a more ambitious project – NEA II

The NEA2 project has a more ambitious vision and aims for the sustainable development of the marine leisure and watersports industry in the Atlantic Area. 23 partners from 8 regions in the Atlantic Area are working together and within their own regions to: appraise the current situation in the marine leisure industry; extract and share best practice; work with marine leisure businesses and service providers to improve their environmental/energy/social equity status; support innovation; assess skills needs of businesses in the sector and develop and deliver training; support participation at marine leisure/watersports industry events, exchanges and conferences; and market the sector to the world.

17 actions, in 4 categories, will be implemented by the partnership as both common and local actions:
  • 5 Actions “Marine leisure and the economy”
  • 5 Actions “Marine leisure and the environment”
  • 4 Actions “Marine leisure and social inclusion”
  • 3 Transversal Actions, for example development and promotion of the Atlantic Watersports Games.
Coordinated by the Regional County of Brittany, the lead partner, NEA 2 will run from January 1st 2009 to December 31st 2011.

Partners include organisations from: Ireland, South-West UK, Basse-Normandie, Brittany, Pays de la Loire, Galicia, North and Central Portugal, Andalucia.
